What are Green Lipped Mussel?

The Green Lipped Mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a shellfish native to the New Zealand coast. Interest in the health benefits of Green Lipped Mussel (GLM) stemmed from the observations of native Maori who resided in the coastal regions of New Zealand. Native Maori have included GLM as a staple in their diet for hundreds of years, and it was found that they had a lower incidence of arthritis than European or inland Maori populations.

How it works

Green Lipped Mussel are naturally able to obtain fundamental nutrients from phytoplankton (a marine organism found in ocean waters) and a vast array of marine minerals found only in the untainted ocean conditions of New Zealand’s pristine waters.

What are the unique qualities of Green Lipped Mussel?

Green Lipped Mussel tissue contains a range of minerals, glycosaminoglycans, protein and lipids that all have major health benefits.

For example, the Glycosaminoglycans contained in GLM include chondroitin sulfate, which is one of the building blocks of healthy joints. GLM tissue is also a natural source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids including the massively beneficial EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which are known to have a positive anti-inflammatory effect. It also contains a type of carbohydrate complex that prevents neutrophils from attacking the body’s cells. This action by the neutrophils is what causes inflammation, so preventing it will also reduce or prevent inflammatory conditions.

Who can use Green Lipped Mussel?

Any person of any age will experience health benefits from taking NutriNZ's Green Lipped Mussel capsules BUT it is important to note that it is a shellfish product so it is not recommended for anyone who may be allergic. Also, as with all dietary supplements you should seek professional advice if you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant or are breast-feeding.

Is it normal for the capsules to have a strong flavour/smell?

Yes, it is completely normal and natural as GLM is a fresh shellfish product.

Please refer to the expiry date, located on the bottom of the bottles. Our products are natural supplements, which are processed and packaged to maximize shelf-life while retaining their nutritional content. Our products are guaranteed to retain their full nutritional content up to and, if stored correctly, beyond the expiry date.

What is Abalone?

Abalone, is a safe marine organism used as a food source with numerous nutraceutical and therapeutic benefits. They are distinct from other species of marine molluscs in having a single flattened shell which places them in the genus ‘haliotis’, which means ‘sea ear’ owing to its peculiar shape.
It is variously known as ear shells, sea ears, and pāua in New Zealand. Due to its various health benefits, it has been called “the emperor of the seashells,” “mother of shellfish,” or more interestingly “ginseng in the ocean”.
The flesh of abalone has been used worldwide as an exotic food due to its portended health benefits. They vary in size, the largest one is about 12 inches long while the smallest is about 20 millimetres. Abalone is considered as a functional food because it aids specific functions for promoting health benefits.

What is the source of Abalone?

NatureSync Abalone is sourced from the cool South Island waters of New Zealand, the perfect place to nurture the world’s healthiest Abalone.

Are there any risks or side-effects with Abalone use?

Abalone is not recommended for people allergic to shellfish and during pregnancy or lactation. Those with shellfish allergy are prone to anaphylactic reactions and should avoid Abalone or its derivatives.

What are NZ's Quotas and Restrictions?

Paua shells grow larger in the cool South Island waters of New Zealand than they do in the warmer north. Consequently, most wild Paua are harvested from the South, Chatham and Stewart Islands.

New Zealand’s paua fishery is managed by strict quotas, which allow only a set amount of Paua to be taken commercially each year. Restrictions on size and harvesting method apply to wild Paua: they must have a minimum shell length of 12.5cm and must only be harvested by free-diving (the use of underwater breathing apparatus is not permitted).

What is Collagen and how does Marine Collagen act?

Collagen is a natural constituent of various tissues in humans and lends the tissues a fuller and refreshed look. It is present in your skin, muscles, bones and tendons and provides elasticity to your skin making it firmer yet softer. It is also a major component of hair and nails.
Marine collagen can provide for the lost collagen due to the ageing process. It is rich in type III collagen and encourages the increase in elastin that improves facial skin, hair and nails. This can halt the ageing process, particularly obvious in the skin, hair and nails. However, it also has a rejuvenating effect on almost all tissues of the body. Besides fighting wrinkles in your skin, collagen helps joint health, with better sleep patterns, and overall feeling of energy and vitality.

Marine Collagen over other Animal Collagen

Other animal collagen is made from beef and/or pork skin; in these cases it is very hard to remove calcium and fatty ingredients. However, Marine Collagen does not contain these components, making it a much purer supplement. This also means that people on a diet or people who have high blood pressure have no problem in consuming the supplement.

Why take as recommended?

The body does not absorb excess collagen; it is simply washed through the system through urine and sweat as a nitrogen resolution without it accumulating in body.

Interaction with other supplements

Marine Collagen is 100% natural and will not effect or conflict with any other vitamins you are taking. However, if you are concerned, please consult with your doctor.

Taste?

Marine Collagen is a tasteless and odourless supplement.
